Jerusalem through its museums

Jerusalem is a cradle not only of religion, but also of art and architecture and a nice way of discovering this aspect is of course visiting its museums. There are actually many different types of museum in the city, so of course our suggestions here are completely personal, but we do think that at least through the first three (the must-see ones) you can have an idea of the many strengths that play an important role in Jerusalem.

The first one you shouldn’t miss is the Israeli Museum. With its almost 50 years of activity, this institution has an incredible collection of archeology and Judaica. And for those of you who enjoy and crave manuscripts just like the nerd inside me, there is a breathtaking collection of medieval codices and the beautiful exhibition of the Shrine of the Book with some of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Israeli Museum is also a great place to visit with kids, for their cultural education programs, and a nice fresh place for the hot summer Saturdays.

Our second suggestion is the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. The museum, established in 1953, is a living memorial of all the victims of the Holocaust. It includes a detailed historical and social overview of the events and a lot of personal memories of the survived and the dead. Going there can be a very hard and emotional visit, but it’s the only way future generations will remember.

The Museum for Islamic Art in Jerusalem is a little museum situated not far from the Jerusalem Theatre. It is an interesting collection of Islamic art and houses the peculiar Sir David Salomons collection of watches. It’s not a huge museums, but gives a good overview of Islamic art throughout the centuries.

These were our must-see museum, but for those who have enough time and for those who really enjoy and love art, here are some other suggestions. They are not in a specific order but if I should advice you on what to pick, I would definitely go to the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum, especially for the own building architecture and for the view on the Mount of Olive and Mount Scopus, and to the U. Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art, a small but fascinating museum which includes a reconstructed synagogue from Conegliano (a small town in north Italy) and an extensive ketubbot collection.
